We are excited to announce the expansion of the Westlake Montessori program to the Toddler age group. This expansion is a result of community demand, especially in an area where few early learning centers cater to this age group with a structured, philosophy-based curriculum.

Below is a brief Q&A with Melissa Cicerchi, Executive Director at Westlake Creative Playrooms.

Q: What are the differences between Toddler Montessori and Traditional Toddler classrooms?

A: The Toddler Montessori classroom is based on the teachings of Dr. Maria Montessori. It emphasizes child-led learning, independence, and hands-on activities tailored to each child’s development. The classrooms are carefully prepared, calm, and orderly. Materials are arranged on open shelves for self-selection. The teachers act as guides or observers. Toddler Montessori addresses more self-care with clean-up, eating, and potty-time. The focus is on the internal motivation of the child.

In a traditional setting, we follow a more teacher-directed model, with group activities and structured lessons guided by our curriculum and schedule. Materials are stored in bins. The classrooms are often brighter in nature with their toys and decor. The lessons are centered around themes and whole group lessons. The teacher directs the classroom, giving the children their activities to do and will use more verbal praises and awards.

Q: What are the benefits of a Toddler Montessori Classroom?

A: A Toddler Montessori classroom offers several developmental benefits that support the whole child—cognitive, emotional, social, and physical growth:

  • Independence: Builds self-care and problem-solving skills

  • Focus: Encourages deep concentration and persistence

  • Sensorial Learning: supports brain development through hands-on activities

  • Language: Enhances vocabulary and communication naturally

  • Social-Emotional Growth: Fosters empathy, patience, and self-regulation

Q: Can you tell us about the Toddler Montessori Teacher?

A: Ms. Fallon Blaine previously served her toddler community at a Montessori school in Arizona for about 8 years. Her experiences with her own children have helped her become fluent in Montessori Methodology. She is looking to pursue a MATE degree and further her Montessori journey. In the classroom, she fosters a safe, engaging, inclusive, nurturing environment while promoting safety, respect, and child independence. She also meets each student where they are and provides guidance on their learning journey. In her free time, she enjoys baking, reading, gardening, and spending time with her family.
